This page is general information, not a diagnosis, recommendation or provider quote. A crown covers much of a prepared tooth. Zirconia is one possible ceramic, but material choice, tooth preparation, appointments and price depend on clinical assessment.

When a crown may be discussed
A crown may be considered when a tooth is too weakened, broken or heavily restored for a smaller repair. It is not automatically the most conservative option. The assessment should consider cracks, remaining tooth tissue, existing fillings, gum health, the bite, the tooth nerve and whether a filling, inlay or onlay could preserve more structure.
Material and preparation
Different ceramics have different strength, translucency and bonding characteristics. Ask why a particular material is proposed for that tooth and how much preparation is expected. Root canal treatment is not automatically required before a crown; it should follow a separate diagnosis where the tooth nerve is inflamed, infected or no longer vital.
What the estimate should name
- The tooth, proposed ceramic, manufacturer or laboratory specification
- Any removal of an old crown, decay treatment, core, post or root treatment
- Preparation, scan or impression, temporary crown, try-in, fitting and review
- The treating clinician and verifiable credentials
- Aftercare, maintenance, complaints and any provider warranty terms
Appointments and maintenance
Whether a temporary crown can be fitted, how many appointments are needed and how long laboratory work takes vary by provider and case. A crown can chip, loosen or need replacement, and the supporting tooth can still develop decay, gum problems or fracture. Obtain a written schedule before travel and keep routine reviews at home.
Can zirconia look like a natural tooth?
Appearance depends on material type, restoration design, underlying tooth colour, available space, shade selection and laboratory work. Ask for the proposed material and try-in process rather than relying on a generic material claim.
Can an old crown be replaced?
Often, but the tooth underneath must be assessed. Decay, a crack, a loose foundation, gum inflammation or a root problem can change what is possible and should be explained before a replacement is agreed.
